Kinesio-Taping (KT Taping)

Kinesiology tape is a flexible therapeutic tape that may be applied to specific areas of the body to provide support, encourage movement, and assist with rehabilitation. It is commonly used as part of physical therapy and sports rehabilitation for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions.

The tape is typically made from lightweight, elastic, latex-free material with an adhesive backing. Unlike rigid athletic tape, kinesiology tape is designed to move with the body and generally allows normal range of motion during daily activities and exercise.

What Is Kinesiology Tape Used For?

Kinesiology tape may be used as part of a rehabilitation program for a variety of musculoskeletal concerns. Physical and occupational therapists may apply it to help support muscles and joints, address movement patterns, and assist with managing symptoms during recovery.

It may be considered for conditions or concerns affecting the:

  • Muscles and tendons
  • Joints
  • Fascia and other soft tissues
  • Upper and lower extremities
  • Areas affected by swelling or injury
  • Healing scars when appropriate

Kinesiology tape is often used in sports rehabilitation but may also be incorporated into treatment for everyday orthopaedic and musculoskeletal conditions.

How Does Kinesiology Tape Work?

Kinesiology tape is designed to stretch and move with the skin and underlying tissues. Depending on how and where it is applied, the tape may provide sensory feedback and external support while allowing the patient to continue moving the affected area.

The therapist determines the placement and application of the tape based on the condition being treated, the patient's symptoms, movement patterns, and rehabilitation goals.

Kinesiology tape is water-resistant and may remain in place during normal daily activities, including showering and exercise, depending on the type of tape used and how it is applied.

How Can Kinesiology Tape Help?

When used as part of an individualized rehabilitation program, kinesiology tape may help:

  • Provide support to muscles and joints
  • Improve awareness of posture and movement patterns
  • Encourage more controlled movement
  • Help manage pain and muscle tension
  • Support rehabilitation after injury
  • Assist with reducing or managing swelling when appropriate
  • Support weak or recovering areas during activity
  • Complement exercises and other rehabilitation techniques
  • Assist with scar management when clinically appropriate

The tape is generally used as one component of treatment rather than as a replacement for therapeutic exercise, strengthening, or other rehabilitation.

What Can I Expect When Kinesiology Tape Is Applied?

A physical or occupational therapist will evaluate the affected area and determine whether kinesiology tape is appropriate for your condition. The skin should generally be clean and dry before application.

The tape is applied in a specific pattern based on the treatment goals and may be worn during normal daily activities. Patients should follow their therapist's instructions regarding how long to wear the tape and when it should be removed.

Some people may experience mild skin irritation or sensitivity to the adhesive. The tape should be removed, and the therapist should be notified if significant itching, redness, irritation, or discomfort develops.
