Get Back to Using Your Hands With Confidence

Specialized hand therapy can help improve strength, mobility, coordination, and function following an injury or ongoing condition.

Repetitive Strain Injury Treatment in Colorado Springs

Repetitive strain injuries can develop when the same movement, position, or force repeatedly places stress on muscles, tendons, nerves, or joints. Typing, gripping tools, lifting, computer work, sports, and other repetitive activities can contribute to pain and reduced function over time.

Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group provides physical and occupational therapy to help patients address repetitive strain injuries, improve movement and function, and safely return to work, exercise, and everyday activities.

What Is a Repetitive Strain Injury?

A repetitive strain injury, also called an overuse injury, is a broad term for pain or tissue irritation caused by repeated stress on the same area of the body. These injuries commonly affect the hands, wrists, forearms, elbows, shoulders, and other joints.

Conditions associated with repetitive strain may include tendinitis, tennis elbow, De Quervain's disease, carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, bursitis, and muscle strains.

Symptoms may include pain, stiffness, swelling, weakness, tingling, numbness, or discomfort that worsens during repeated activities.

How Can Physical and Occupational Therapy Help?

Physical and occupational therapy can help address symptoms while identifying movement patterns or activities that may be contributing to ongoing stress.

Therapy may help patients:

  • Improve flexibility, strength, posture, and joint control
  • Reduce stress on irritated muscles, tendons, nerves, and joints
  • Improve hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder, or other affected areas
  • Learn safer ways to type, grip, lift, reach, and perform work tasks
  • Modify activities and improve body mechanics
  • Gradually return to work, exercise, sports, and other activities

The goal is to improve function while helping reduce repeated stress on the affected area.

When Should I Consider Therapy for a Repetitive Strain Injury?

Therapy may be recommended when symptoms affect work, exercise, sleep, or everyday activities.

Patients may benefit from rehabilitation when:

  • Pain returns whenever the same activity is repeated
  • Hand or wrist symptoms make typing, gripping, or lifting difficult
  • Elbow or shoulder pain affects reaching or carrying
  • Tingling or numbness interferes with normal activities
  • Pain continues despite rest or activity modification
  • Weakness affects work or daily tasks

Persistent symptoms should be evaluated to determine whether an underlying tendon, nerve, joint, or other orthopaedic condition requires additional treatment.

What Happens During Therapy?

Treatment begins with an evaluation of the painful area and the activities that trigger or worsen symptoms. The therapist may assess movement, strength, posture, flexibility, grip, sensation, and how the affected area is used during daily activities.

Depending on the condition, treatment may include targeted exercises, movement training, activity modification, ergonomic recommendations, joint protection strategies, and guidance on modifying workstations, tools, or repetitive tasks.

The treatment plan is adjusted as symptoms improve and the patient is able to safely increase activity.

What Can I Expect During Recovery?

Recovery depends on the underlying condition, how long symptoms have been present, and the ability to modify activities that repeatedly aggravate the affected area.

Progress may include less pain during activity, improved movement and strength, and greater tolerance for work, exercise, and daily tasks. Home exercises and activity modifications may also play an important role in maintaining long-term improvement.

If symptoms do not improve or continue to worsen, additional evaluation may be recommended.

When Should I Seek Further Orthopaedic Care?

Persistent or worsening pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, or loss of function should be evaluated by an appropriate orthopaedic provider.
